What are the PROPRIO® Reactive Balance Systems?

The PROPRIO® Reactive Balance Systems provide an innovative, versatile, affordable, and more effective approach to assessing, measuring, and training balance, posture, strength, and mobility deficits resulting from neurologic, orthopedic, and vestibular issues.

Why are balance and proprioception important?

The highly sophisticated balance-control mechanism is essential to effective human movement. The key to quality of movement is proprioception. Proprioception is the sense of body joint position. Along with our vision and vestibular systems, proprioception helps us maintain our balance and protects joints in environments with excessive movement.

What is the difference between the PROPRIO® and free motion balance trainers?

The PROPRIO® Reactive Balance Systems provide reactive training. The user reacts to the platform’s movement, which better emulates real life situations. Free motion balance trainers, like wobble boards and foam rolls require the user to balance on platforms that become unstable because of their movement. This type of training is anticipatory versus reactive. Learn more about the difference between anticipatory and reactive balance by watching this six minute video on YouTube: Reactive Balance Training.

Who can benefit from PROPRIO® training

One of the most used pieces of equipment in every clinic, the PROPRIO® Reactive Balance Systems benefit the widest range of people – from fragile geriatric patients at risk of falling to NFL and Olympic athletes seeking performance enhancement; from the Army’s wounded soldiers to individuals with Down syndrome or Parkinson’s disease.
Because the platform’s degree of tilt, direction of tilt, and speed of tilt is fully programmable, both low level functioning patients and world class athletes benefit. Since the clinician is controlling the platform, it provides a safe, controlled, and comfortable exercise without the risk of injury that can occur with free motion types of balance trainers.

How does the PROPRIO® measure the user’s movement?

Research shows that it is better to assess a person’s dynamic stability using trunk measurements than lower leg postural readings. Other than the $1.2 million CAREN system, the PROPRIO® Reactive Balance Systems stand alone in measuring trunk movement.
The PROPRIO® Reactive Balance Systems feature an ultrasonic measuring system that consists of a triangular shape transmitter that is belted on the user's lumbosacral joint and a larger triangular shaped receiver located on the back of the machine. The transmitter emits ultrasonic waves to the receiver. As the user's body position changes, the ultrasonic waves convey these changes instantaneously. The relative position of the transmitter is recorded in three dimensional space (X, Y, and Z coordinates) every 1/4 of a second.
